Abstract
What do informal forms of work organisation mean for the collective organisation of workers in the meat industry? The answer to this question is of crucial importance, not only for the concrete formulation of labour policies aimed at improving working conditions and promoting employee participation in the meat industry. It also points more generally to problems of collective organisation in the context of multiple forms of precariousness, discrimination under immigration and social welfare laws, as well as insecure and, in some cases, unlivable employment. In this article, the latter is discussed on the basis of an empirical study conducted at a major meat industry site in Germany.
